## Short answer

- Gemini 2 is a free download, but one-click removal needs Yearly Access, $19.99 a year in the US Mac App Store as of October 2026.
- Duplicate File Finder Pro from Nektony is the closest full-drive match for a single price: $34.99 once.
- Sweepy costs $9.99 once and is built for Downloads and Desktop, with every cleanup undoable from History.
- dupeGuru and Czkawka are free and open source but have rougher Mac apps.
- Photos merges duplicate pictures in your library for free, so you may not need an app for photos at all.

## Why people look for a Gemini 2 alternative

Gemini 2 from MacPaw is a good duplicate finder. It scans whole drives, the Photos and Music libraries, and finds similar photos as well as exact copies. The common complaint is the price model, not the app.

As of October 19, 2026, the US Mac App Store lists Gemini 2 as a free download with two in-app purchases: **Yearly Access, $19.99** and **Smart Cleanup, $19.99**. Without a purchase it still finds duplicates, but you remove them one by one with Reveal in Finder. Most people clean duplicates a few times a year. Paying every year for that is what sends them looking.

So the question is usually: *what does the same job for a one-time price, or for free?*

## 1. Duplicate File Finder Pro: the closest full-drive match

If you use Gemini 2 to scan everything, including external drives and the Photos library, Nektony's **Duplicate File Finder Pro** is the nearest like-for-like swap at a single price: **$34.99** in the Mac App Store, with no subscription listed. Its listing covers internal, external, network and cloud drives, similar photos and audio, multiple Photos libraries, folder merging and CSV reports. Removed files can go to the Trash, and removed duplicates can be restored.

It costs more up front than one year of Gemini 2, so it pays off from the second year.

Nektony also sells a free app, **Duplicate File Finder Remover**, that finds and deletes duplicates at no cost. Its Pro mode adds auto-select, bulk selection, folder merging and restoring removed duplicates, and is offered as $34.99 lifetime, $14.99 a year or $7.99 a month. If you only need to clean once, the free version may be all you need.

## 2. Sweepy: for Downloads and Desktop, paid once

We make Sweepy, so weigh this one with that in mind. Sweepy is not a whole-drive scanner. It is built for the folders where copies pile up: Downloads and Desktop, plus any others you add.

- **Duplicates** matched byte for byte, even across folders; it keeps the copy with the plain name that was downloaded first.
- **Old installers**, files not opened in 90 days, and files of 500 MB or more, which are never pre-selected.
- **Every file goes to the Trash**, and **History undoes a whole cleanup**: 7 days on Free, 30 days on Pro.

The free version does everything for two folders. **Pro is $9.99 once**, an in-app purchase with no auto-renewal, and lifts the folder limit. If your duplicates are mostly repeated downloads, this is the cheapest paid option here. If they are spread across external drives and your photo library, pick Nektony's app instead. See the [Sweepy page](https://oneclicktool.app/macos/sweepy) for screenshots.

## 3. dupeGuru: free, but frozen since 2022

dupeGuru is free, open source and runs on Mac, Windows and Linux. It has three modes (standard, music and picture), fuzzy name matching, and can move or copy duplicates instead of deleting them, which is a safe way to work.

The catch is age. The last release on GitHub is **4.3.1 from July 9, 2022**. It still runs on Apple silicon, but nothing has been fixed in over four years. We compared it with Gemini 2 in detail in [Gemini 2 vs dupeGuru](https://oneclicktool.app/compare/gemini-2-vs-dupeguru).

## 4. Czkawka and Krokiet: free, fast, for people at home in GitHub

Czkawka is a free, open-source cleaner that finds duplicates, empty folders, big files, similar images, similar videos and same music. It is actively developed: version **12.0.2 was released on September 9, 2026**. Krokiet is its newer interface.

On a Mac it is less friendly. The GitHub release ships plain Apple silicon binaries rather than a Mac App Store app or a signed installer, so expect macOS to ask before it opens, and expect an interface that looks like Linux. If that does not bother you, it is the most capable free option on this list.

## 5. Photos: free, if your duplicates are pictures

If most of your duplicates are photos, you may not need any app. The Photos app on recent macOS versions has a **Duplicates** album in the sidebar that groups identical and near-identical photos and lets you merge them, keeping the best quality and combining their details. Apple explains it in [Remove duplicate photos and videos](https://support.apple.com/guide/photos/remove-duplicates-pht5a3157c1d/mac). It does not touch files outside your library.

## Which alternative fits you?

- **You scanned your whole Mac with Gemini 2 and want the same, paid once:** Duplicate File Finder Pro, $34.99.
- **You want free and will clean by hand:** Duplicate File Finder Remover (free mode) or dupeGuru.
- **Your copies are mostly downloads and screenshots:** Sweepy, free for two folders, $9.99 once for more.
- **You are comfortable with open-source tools:** Czkawka.
- **It is mostly photos:** the Photos Duplicates album.

Whichever you pick, delete into the Trash and keep it for a few days; our guide to [deleting duplicate files safely](https://oneclicktool.app/fix/storage/delete-duplicate-files-safely-mac) shows how. ## FAQ

**Is Gemini 2 a subscription?**

Yes, for full use. The Mac App Store lists Gemini 2 as free with an in-app purchase called Yearly Access at $19.99, and a separate Smart Cleanup purchase at $19.99. Without a purchase it finds duplicates, but you remove them by hand.

**Is there a Gemini 2 lifetime license?**

Not in the Mac App Store as of October 19, 2026: the in-app purchases listed there are Yearly Access and Smart Cleanup. MacPaw also sells Gemini through Setapp, which is a monthly subscription to many apps. Check MacPaw's own store if you need a one-time license.

**What is the best free alternative to Gemini 2?**

For photos, the built-in Photos app merges duplicates for free. For any folder, Nektony's free Duplicate File Finder Remover finds and deletes duplicates, and dupeGuru and Czkawka are free and open source. Sweepy is free for two folders, enough for Downloads and Desktop.

**Can I keep using files Gemini 2 already cleaned if I switch?**

Yes. Gemini 2 moves removed files to the Trash by default, and switching apps does not touch them. Empty or restore the Trash as usual, then scan with the new app.
