Chrome freezing randomly is worse than Chrome being slow. Everything stops: clicks do nothing, the page will not scroll, and on a Mac the spinning wait cursor appears. Sometimes it recovers after half a minute. Sometimes you have to force it closed.
This guide first helps you tell what kind of freeze you have, then how to get out of it without losing your tabs, then the fixes for each cause on Mac and Windows.
The short answer#
- Find out what froze: one tab, or all of Chrome.
- Unfreeze it safely, then restore tabs with Ctrl+Shift+T or Command+Shift+T.
- Most random freezes are memory: too many live tabs and extensions.
- Then check extensions and graphics, in that order.
What we measured on a Mac#
Tested on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) with 16 GB of RAM, macOS 26.3, Chrome 155, October 21, 2026. We froze one tab on purpose with a script that kept its page busy for 40 seconds, then opened Wikipedia in a new tab and timed it.
- The frozen tab did not answer at all for 8 seconds.
- The new tab loaded Wikipedia in 341 ms, against 310 ms with nothing frozen.
So a single frozen page does not freeze Chrome. Each tab runs in its own process, and the rest of the browser carries on. If the whole window, the menus and every tab stop responding together, the cause is something wider: memory, an extension, graphics or the disk, which is what the sections below cover.
Tab freeze or browser freeze?#
| What you see | What froze | Most likely cause |
|---|---|---|
| One page will not respond, other tabs work | That tab | The page itself, an embedded ad or video, an extension on that site |
| A dialog offers to wait or exit the page | That tab | A script stuck in a loop |
| All of Chrome stops, menus too | The browser or the computer | Low memory, graphics driver, security software |
| The whole computer stalls, not just Chrome | The system | Memory or disk pressure |
How to unfreeze Chrome without losing tabs#
- Wait thirty seconds. Many freezes are the computer catching up after running low on memory.
- One tab stuck? Close it with Ctrl+W (Command+W), or open Chrome's task manager with Shift+Esc on Windows or the Window menu, then Task Manager on a Mac, select the tab and click End process. Google's speed-up guide notes that unsaved work in that task is lost.
- Whole browser stuck? On Windows, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), select Google Chrome and click End task. On a Mac, press Command+Option+Esc, choose Google Chrome and click Force Quit.
- Reopen Chrome and press Ctrl+Shift+T (Command+Shift+T on a Mac) to restore your last session. Our restore tabs in Chrome guide covers what to do if that does not bring everything back.
1. Running out of memory#
This is the most common cause of random freezes, especially on 8 GB machines. Each live tab keeps its page in memory, and extensions add memory to every tab. When memory runs out, the system moves data to disk and everything stalls.
- On a Mac, open Activity Monitor and check Memory Pressure. Yellow or red means memory is tight.
- On Windows, Task Manager's Performance tab shows memory in use. Above 90% means trouble.
Fixes: close tabs you do not need, turn on Memory Saver in Settings, then Performance, and remove extensions you have not used in a month. The full list is in Chrome using too much memory.
2. One heavy or stuck page#
Video editors, huge spreadsheets, live dashboards and pages full of ads can lock up their tab. If the freeze always starts on the same site, the site is the cause. Keep it in its own window, close it when you are done, or use its desktop app.
3. An extension conflict#
Extensions run code on every page, and two that change the same page can fight.
- Use Chrome in an Incognito window for a day. Most extensions do not run there.
- If the freezes stop, go to
chrome://extensions, turn them all off, and turn them back on a few at a time. - Remove the one that brings the freezes back.
4. Graphics acceleration and drivers#
If the whole window freezes, flickers or goes black, the graphics path may be the cause.
- Go to Settings, then System.
- Turn off Use graphics acceleration when available, relaunch, and use Chrome for a day.
- If the freezes stop, update your graphics driver on Windows (Intel, AMD or NVIDIA) or update macOS, then try turning it back on.
If Chrome still freezes with acceleration off, look for the busy tab or process in Chrome high CPU usage on Mac.
5. Security software#
Antivirus and some company security tools inspect every file Chrome writes and every connection it opens. Some do it slowly. If freezes started when you installed or updated security software, check its settings or ask your IT team. Do not just uninstall it on a work computer.
6. A nearly full disk#
Chrome writes its cache, session and history to disk constantly. When the disk is almost full, those writes slow down, and on a Mac low disk space also limits how much memory macOS can swap. Keep at least 10% of the disk free.
7. An out-of-date Chrome#
Go to the three-dot menu, then Help, then About Google Chrome, and relaunch if asked. If freezing started right after an update, see Chrome slow after update.
8. A damaged profile#
Create a new profile from your profile picture, then Add. Use it for a day without syncing. If it never freezes, your main profile is the problem. Reset settings (Settings, then Reset settings, then Restore settings to their original defaults) or move to the new profile and sign in to sync.
9. Freezing when printing or uploading#
These freezes come from the conversation between Chrome and the operating system, not from the page. Update your printer driver or choose Save as PDF to test. For uploads, pick the file from a local folder rather than a network drive or a cloud folder that is still syncing.
Keep it from happening again#
Random freezes nearly always point to a browser near its limits. Keep fewer tabs live and fewer extensions installed. Memory Saver sleeps idle tabs on its own. For a fixed rule, Cleaner Pro sleeps tabs after 30 minutes without use, never touches the tab you are on, and closes duplicate tabs in one click, for a one-time $19.99. If Chrome shows Not Responding rather than freezing outright, our guide to Chrome not responding has more steps.
The bottom line#
Find out whether a tab or the whole browser froze, get out safely and restore your tabs, then deal with memory first, extensions second and graphics third. That order fixes the large majority of random Chrome freezes.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Chrome keep freezing?
The most common causes are running low on memory with many tabs and extensions open, one heavy or stuck page, an extension conflict, a graphics driver problem with hardware acceleration, or security software scanning everything Chrome does. A frozen whole browser and a frozen single tab have different causes, so check which one you have first.
How do I unfreeze Chrome without losing my tabs?
Wait thirty seconds first. If one tab is stuck, Chrome usually offers to wait or exit that page. If the whole browser is frozen, end Chrome from Task Manager on Windows or Force Quit on a Mac, then reopen it and press Ctrl+Shift+T or Command+Shift+T to restore your last session.
Can low RAM make Chrome freeze?
Yes. When memory runs out, the computer moves data to disk, and everything slows to a crawl, which looks like freezing. Closing tabs, turning on Memory Saver and removing unused extensions are the fastest fixes on computers with 8 GB of memory or less.
Why does Chrome freeze when I print or upload files?
Printing and file dialogs talk to the operating system and your printer or file system. A bad printer driver, a slow network drive or a cloud folder that is still syncing can stall that conversation. Update the printer driver, try saving as PDF instead, or pick files from a local folder.
