If Chrome shows Paused next to your profile picture every time you open it, and Gmail, YouTube and Drive ask you to sign in again, Chrome sync paused because Chrome lost your Google sign-in. Usually it lost it on purpose, because of one setting that clears your sign-ins whenever the browser closes.
Google's own autocomplete tells the story: people type "chrome sync paused every time" and "chrome sync paused after closing". This guide explains what Paused means, shows the setting that causes it in a test we ran on a Mac, and gives a fix that keeps you signed in to Google without giving up the privacy of clearing everything else.
The short answer#
- Paused means Chrome lost your Google sign-in. Your data is still there.
- Every restart? Chrome is set to delete site data when it closes.
- Fix it by allowing sites to save data, or by adding Google as an exception.
- Only after signing out of Gmail? That is by design. Sign in again.
What does Paused mean in Chrome?#
Chrome has two layers of sign-in:
- The Chrome profile, which knows which Google Account it belongs to and holds your bookmarks, passwords and history.
- Your Google sign-in on the web, the same one Gmail and YouTube use, kept as cookies.
Sync needs both. When the profile is still set up but the web sign-in is gone, Chrome shows Paused. It has not signed you out of Chrome and it has not deleted anything. It is waiting for you to prove it is still you.
So the real question is never "why did sync break" but "what deleted my Google sign-in cookies".
Why does Chrome sync pause every time I close it?#
Almost always: Chrome is set to delete site data when you close all windows. That setting lives in On-device site data, and Google's help page lists three choices:
| Option | What Google says it does |
|---|---|
| Allow sites to save data on your device | Sites are more likely to work as you expect |
| Delete data sites have saved to your device when you close all windows | Sites will probably work but are less likely to remember you |
| Don't allow sites to save data on your device (not recommended) | Sites may not work as you expect |
"Less likely to remember you" includes Google. When Chrome closes, your Google sign-in cookies are deleted with everything else. The next morning, Chrome opens with a profile but no sign-in: Paused.
What we tested on a Mac#
Tested on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro), macOS 26.3, Chrome 155.0.8059.85, October 21, 2026.
We built a small test site that saves a 30-day "remember me" cookie when you sign in, then asked Chrome, after a full restart, whether it was still signed in. Each run used a clean test profile, so nothing else interfered:
| On-device site data setting | Signed in | After closing and reopening Chrome |
|---|---|---|
| Allow sites to save data (default) | Yes | Still signed in |
| Delete data when you close all windows | Yes | Signed out |
| Delete on close, plus the test site added as allowed | Yes | Still signed in |
The cookie was set to last 30 days, and the setting still deleted it at the first restart. The third row is the useful one: you can keep clearing everything on close and still exempt the few sites you need, such as Google's sign-in.
How to fix Chrome sync paused#
1. Sign in again to get syncing now#
- Click your profile picture at the top right, where it says Paused.
- Click Sign in again or Verify it's you, and sign in to the same Google Account.
Sync resumes and uploads anything you changed while it was paused. This fixes today. The next steps stop it happening tomorrow.
2. Check what Chrome does with site data on close#
- Open Settings, then Privacy and security, then Site settings.
- Open Additional content settings, then On-device site data. You can also paste
chrome://settings/content/siteDatainto the address bar. - Look at the default behavior. If it says Delete data sites have saved to your device when you close all windows, that is your cause.
- Choose Allow sites to save data on your device if you do not need the privacy setting.
If the option is greyed out with a building icon, your browser is managed by a work or school policy. Only your IT team can change it.
3. Or keep the setting and add Google as an exception#
If you like Chrome clearing sites on close, keep it and exempt Google:
- On the same On-device site data page, find the list of sites allowed to save data and click Add.
- Add
accounts.google.com. - Add
[*.]google.comto cover Gmail, Drive and the other Google sites. - Close Chrome completely, reopen it, and check that Paused is gone.
This is the same setup as the third row of our test. If you also want to keep, say, your bank or work tools signed in, add them the same way.
If you clean cookies by hand or with an extension instead, the same idea applies. Cleaner, our free Chrome extension, has a protected sites list; put Google's sign-in sites on it and they are skipped when you clean everything else.
4. Signing out of Gmail also pauses sync#
If sync pauses only after you click Sign out in Gmail or YouTube, nothing is broken. Those sites share the same Google sign-in as Chrome on your computer, so signing out of one signs out the web session Chrome uses. Sign in again from the Paused button. If you meant to switch accounts, use a separate Chrome profile for each account instead of signing out.
5. Something else is deleting cookies#
If the setting is already on Allow and sync still pauses after every restart, another program is clearing Chrome's cookies:
- Cleanup apps and "PC optimizers" often clear browser cookies on a schedule or at shutdown. Exclude Chrome.
- Privacy extensions that auto-delete cookies. Turn them off at
chrome://extensionsand restart Chrome to test. - Security software with a browser-cleaning feature.
Our guide on why Chrome keeps logging you out goes through each of these in detail, including how to tell whether every site or only Google is affected.
6. Your Google password or security settings changed#
Changing your Google password, or a security check on your account, signs you out on other devices on purpose. Chrome shows Paused once, you sign in again, and it stays fixed. If this happens often and you did not change anything, review Security in your Google Account for recent activity.
What not to do#
- Do not sign out of Chrome to "reset" sync. Signing out removes synced data from this device. Paused never needs that.
- Do not turn off sync and back on as a first step. Sign in again instead.
- Do not change random chrome://flags settings to fix it. Guides that suggest this warn they can make Chrome unstable, and the cause is almost always the cookie setting above.
Still pausing?#
Make a test profile: click your profile picture, then Add, sign in, close Chrome and reopen it. If the new profile stays signed in, something in your old profile's settings or extensions is still deleting cookies. If it pauses too, a program outside Chrome is the cause.
If Chrome logged you out of every site at once and your passwords disappeared too, that is a different problem: see Chrome logged me out of everything.
Frequently asked questions
What does Paused mean in Google Chrome?
Paused means Chrome is still set up with your Google Account but no longer has a valid sign-in for it. Sync stops until you sign in again. Your bookmarks, passwords and history stay on the computer, and changes sync once you click Paused and sign back in.
Why does Chrome sync pause every time I close the browser?
Usually because Chrome is set to delete site data when you close all windows. That removes your Google sign-in cookies too, so Chrome wakes up signed out of Google and shows Paused. Allow sites to save data, or keep the setting and add Google's sign-in site as an exception.
Will I lose my bookmarks or passwords when sync is paused?
No. Paused is not the same as signed out of Chrome. Your data stays in this Chrome profile, and your Google Account keeps the copy it already had. Changes you make while paused upload after you sign in again.
Why does signing out of Gmail pause Chrome sync?
Gmail, YouTube and Chrome share the same Google sign-in on your computer. Signing out of Gmail in a tab signs you out of Google on the web, so Chrome loses the sign-in it needs for sync and shows Paused until you sign in again.
How do I keep Chrome from signing me out of Google but still clear cookies?
Keep Chrome's delete-on-close setting, then add accounts.google.com and google.com to the list of sites allowed to save data. Those sites keep their sign-in cookies when Chrome closes, while every other site is still cleared.
