What Is Claude Fable? Anthropic's Top Model Explained (Fable 5.1)

What is Claude Fable? A plain guide to Fable 5.1: how it relates to Mythos, what it costs, how it compares with Opus 5.5, and when it is worth using.

By OneClickTool Studio · Oct 1, 2026 · 6 min read

What is Claude Fable? Claude Fable is Anthropic's most capable model that anyone can use. The current version, Fable 5.1, came out on September 1, 2026. It is built for long, ambitious work: agents that run for hours, big coding projects, and analysis of huge document sets.

Fable also has the most confusing backstory of any AI model this year. It is tied to a model called Mythos, it was pulled days after launch, and it now sits above Opus in price but not always in results. We build apps with Claude every day at OneClickTool, so here is the plain version: what Fable is, what it costs, and when it is worth paying for.

The short answer

  • Claude Fable 5.1 is Anthropic's top generally available model, released September 1, 2026.
  • It is the same model as Mythos 5.1, but with extra safeguards so it can be offered to everyone.
  • It costs $10 input / $50 output per million tokens through the API, and it is included in Claude Pro ($20 a month) and higher plans.
  • For most work, Opus 5.5 is the better default: it scores as well or better on Anthropic's published tests and costs 60% less. Use Fable when Opus keeps failing a hard problem.

What is Claude Fable 5.1, exactly?

Anthropic describes Fable 5.1 as its model for "your most ambitious, long-running projects." Its product page lists four main uses:

  • Autonomous agents that work across several applications for hours.
  • Large coding projects that need careful, high-fidelity implementation.
  • Complex business workflows that run with little human oversight.
  • Document-heavy work in finance, law and analytics, including reading charts and scans.

Key specs, from Anthropic and API providers:

Spec Claude Fable 5.1
Released September 1, 2026
API model ID claude-fable-5-1
Context window 1 million tokens
Max output 128,000 tokens
Price (input / output per 1M tokens) $10 / $50
Cache reads $0.25 per 1M tokens (75% less than Fable 5)
In the Claude app Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise (not Free)
Also on AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Foundry

Anthropic estimates Fable 5.1 cuts typical workload costs by about 25% compared with Fable 5, and up to about 45% on highly agentic work, mostly through cheaper caching.

Fable vs Mythos: why there are two names

This is the part that confuses most people.

Mythos is Anthropic's frontier model family. When it was first disclosed as "Mythos Preview" in April 2026, Anthropic said it had no plan to release it publicly. Instead it gave a small group of large companies access for defensive security work.

Fable is how Anthropic made that level of capability available to everyone. According to Silicon Republic's launch coverage, Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 are "the same model, but with different levels of safeguards." In practice:

  • Fable 5.1 is generally available. When a request is flagged as touching risky cybersecurity, biology or chemistry topics, it is routed to a less capable model instead.
  • Mythos 5.1 has fewer of those limits, and it is only available to vetted organizations through Anthropic's trusted-access programs.

For normal work (writing, coding your own app, analysis) you will not notice the safeguards. Fable 5.1 can even scan your own code for security holes; only developing exploits stays blocked.

A short history: from launch to ban to 5.1

Fable's first months were bumpy, which is why you still see searches like "claude fable 5 ban."

  • April 7, 2026: Mythos Preview is disclosed, with access limited to about 40 companies.
  • June 9: Anthropic releases Mythos 5 (restricted) and Fable 5 (general availability).
  • June 12: The US Department of Commerce bars access for non-US nationals, and Anthropic pauses access.
  • June 26–30: Access returns for US organizations, then the export restriction is lifted on June 30.
  • July 1–19: Fable 5 is open to all subscribers for a trial period.
  • July 20: Fable becomes a standard feature of paid plans.
  • September 1: Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 launch.

This timeline comes from public reporting summarized on Wikipedia. The short version for users: the ban is over, and Fable is a normal part of paid Claude plans.

Claude Fable pricing: API and subscription

Through the API, Fable 5.1 is the most expensive current Claude model by a wide margin:

Model Input / Output per 1M tokens
Haiku 4.5 $1 / $5
Sonnet 5.5 $2 / $10
Opus 5.5 $4 / $20
Fable 5.1 $10 / $50

A job that writes 100,000 tokens of output costs about $5 on Fable versus $2 on Opus 5.5. Batch processing halves Fable's price to $5 / $25 when you can wait for results.

On a subscription, you do not pay per token. Claude Pro at $20 a month includes Fable, and so do Max, Team and Enterprise. According to Claude's pricing page, Fable on Pro and Max draws from 50% of your weekly limits, so it uses up your allowance faster than Opus or Sonnet.

How good is Fable 5.1?

Anthropic reports big jumps over Fable 5. Two examples from its launch numbers:

  • Terminal-Bench 4.0 (agentic coding in a terminal): 55.8%, up from 42.0%.
  • Terminal-Bench-Science (agentic scientific research): 52.6%, up from 24.7%.

Fable 5.1 also supports adjustable effort. Independent tests by Artificial Analysis, as listed by OrcaRouter, show higher effort buys a bit more intelligence at a much higher cost per task: roughly $2.37 at low effort versus $7.63 at max.

Here is the twist. Three weeks later Anthropic released Opus 5.5, and on the benchmarks Anthropic published, Opus 5.5 scores higher than Fable 5.1 on every row, including 66.4% vs 55.8% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, while costing 60% less. Anthropic still calls Fable its model for the hardest reasoning, but for most tasks Opus 5.5 is now the smarter buy. Our Opus vs Fable vs Sonnet comparison has the full table.

When Claude Fable is worth it

Use Fable 5.1 when the cost of a missed detail is higher than the extra tokens. Signs you need it:

  1. Opus 5.5 at high effort keeps failing the same task. Same wrong fix, same missed condition.
  2. The task is very long and autonomous. An agent that runs for hours with little checking benefits from the extra depth.
  3. You are cross-checking large document sets, such as contracts or financial filings, where one conflict matters.

Skip Fable when:

  • The task is routine or well defined. Sonnet 5.5 handles it for a fifth of the output price.
  • You are on a Pro plan and near your weekly limit. Fable burns the limit faster.
  • You have not tried raising Opus 5.5's effort level yet. That is the cheaper first step, explained in our guide on how to use Claude Opus 5.5 effectively.

Common misunderstandings

  • "Fable is always the best Claude model." Not anymore. On many tests Opus 5.5 matches or beats it.
  • "Fable is still banned." The June 2026 restriction was lifted on June 30.
  • "I need the $100 Max plan for Fable." No. Pro at $20 includes it, with tighter limits.
  • "Fable and Mythos are different brains." They are the same model; Mythos just has fewer safeguards and restricted access.

The bottom line

Claude Fable 5.1 is Anthropic's most powerful model you can actually use, built for long, high-stakes work. It is not the right default for most people: Opus 5.5 is cheaper and, on many tasks, just as good. Keep Fable as your escalation step.

Frequently asked questions

What is Claude Fable used for?

Anthropic positions Claude Fable 5.1 for its most ambitious, long-running work: autonomous agents that run for hours across apps, large coding projects, and document-heavy analysis in finance, law and research. For most everyday tasks, Opus 5.5 or Sonnet 5.5 is faster and cheaper.

Is Claude Fable the same as Claude Mythos?

Almost. Anthropic describes Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 as the same model with different safeguards. Fable is generally available and redirects flagged cybersecurity, biology and chemistry requests to a less capable model. Mythos is limited to vetted organizations through trusted-access programs.

How much does Claude Fable cost?

Through the API, Fable 5.1 costs $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, with cache reads at $0.25 per million. In the Claude app it is included in Pro ($20 per month), Max, Team and Enterprise plans, but not in the Free plan.

Why was Claude Fable 5 banned?

Days after Fable 5 launched on June 9, 2026, the US Department of Commerce restricted access for non-US nationals, and Anthropic paused access. Access returned to US organizations in late June, the restriction was lifted on June 30, and Fable became a standard part of paid plans on July 20.

Is Claude Fable better than Opus 5.5?

Not on every test. On Anthropic's own published benchmarks, Opus 5.5 beats Fable 5.1 on coding and knowledge-work rows while costing 60% less. Fable is the escalation step for the hardest reasoning and longest agent runs, when Opus at high effort still fails.
