Dark Mode for Google Docs — Privacy Policy
Extension: Dark Mode for Google Docs™ – Night Theme · Last updated: October 21, 2026
This extension turns web pages dark, with dedicated handling for Google Docs. It has no servers of its own, no account with us, and no analytics, tracking or advertising code. In this version it makes no network requests of any kind — not one. Everything it knows about you is a handful of settings sitting in your own browser.
1. What We Store
Everything the extension keeps is in your own browser. None of it is sent to us.
| Data | Where it is stored | Why | Leaves your device? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your settings — dark mode on/off, theme, intensity, brightness, contrast, grayscale, “keep image colors”, force mode | chrome.storage.sync | Remember how you like your pages to look | Only through your own Chrome Sync, if you have it turned on |
| Your night schedule — whether it is on, and the start and end times | chrome.storage.sync | Turn dark mode on and off at the hours you chose | Only through your own Chrome Sync, if you have it turned on |
| Sites you mark always-dark or never-dark (domain names only, for example example.com) | chrome.storage.sync | Apply your per-site choice the next time you open that site | Only through your own Chrome Sync, if you have it turned on |
| How many times you have switched dark mode on, and whether you answered the rating prompt | chrome.storage.local | Ask for a review once, after the third time, and never ask again | No |
| Whether dark mode is on, and the colors of your chosen theme | localStorage on the Google Docs page you have open (key ext-darkmode-docs) | The page script needs this the instant the document starts loading, which is what removes the white flash. Extension storage is too slow to read at that moment. | No — it never leaves your browser, and no site can send it anywhere |
2. What the Extension Reads on a Page
On ordinary websites. It adds a stylesheet of its own and reads the colors the page already uses, so it can darken them. It does not read your text, your form fields, your passwords, your cookies, or anything you type.
On Google Docs. Google Docs draws your document onto a <canvas>, which ordinary CSS cannot reach. So on docs.google.com the extension wraps the two canvas properties that set a fill color and a line color, and rewrites each color it is given: light becomes dark, dark becomes light, and the hue is kept so your red stays red. That is the whole of it. It never reads back what is drawn, never touches the function that draws images (which is why your photos keep their true colors), and never copies, stores or transmits the contents of your document. The extension cannot see your document text, and nothing about your document is written anywhere.
3. Third-Party Services
None. This version contacts no server, ours or anyone else's. There is no analytics service, no error reporting, no font or script loaded from a CDN, and no advertising network.
A future version is planned to add an optional paid upgrade. If and when that ships, the only thing that would ever be sent is the license key you type in, to Lemon Squeezy, to check that it is valid — and this page will be updated with a new date before that version is published. Nothing of the sort happens in the current version.
4. Permissions
storage— saves the settings listed in section 1.activeTab— reads the address of the tab you are looking at when you open the popup, so the "always dark on this site" and "never dark on this site" buttons apply to the right site.tabs— when your night schedule starts or ends, dark mode has to switch in every open tab, not just the one in front. This permission is also what lets the extension apply your saved per-site choice the moment a page loads, instead of after a flash of white.alarms— runs the night schedule. A service worker cannot be trusted with a timer because Chrome suspends it, so Chrome's own alarm is used to check the time once a minute.- Access to all websites — the point of the extension is dark mode on whatever site you choose to visit, so its stylesheet has to be able to run anywhere. As described in section 2, it only looks at colors and adds a stylesheet. It makes no network requests, so nothing it sees on a page can go anywhere.
5. Data Retention and Deletion
All data lives in your browser. Uninstalling the extension removes it. You can also clear your per-site lists and reset your settings in the popup at any time. We hold no copy, so there is nothing for us to delete and nothing for us to hand over.
6. Children's Privacy
The extension is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them. It collects no personal data from anyone.
7. Changes to This Policy
If a future version changes what the extension stores, or adds any network request at all, this page will be updated with a new date before that version ships, and the change will be called out in the release notes.
