Best duplicate file finder for Mac: 5 options, free to paid
Five ways to find duplicate files on a Mac, from free Photos and dupeGuru to Gemini 2, Duplicate File Finder and Sweepy, with prices checked at the source.
Disclosure: we make Sweepy. Other apps are described from their makers' own pages and App Store listings, with links in Sources.
- For duplicate photos, start with the Duplicates album built into the Photos app: free, and merged copies wait 30 days in Recently Deleted.
- For a free scan of any folder, dupeGuru still works, but its last release (4.3.1) came out in July 2022.
- For a whole-drive scan with similar photos and music, Gemini 2 is the most complete pick, sold as a yearly plan in the Mac App Store.
- For cleaning Downloads and Desktop with a one-click undo, Sweepy is free for two folders and $9.99 once for more. We make Sweepy.
The five options at a glance#
There is no single best duplicate file finder for every Mac. The right one depends on where your copies live: in the Photos library, across a whole drive, or in the Downloads folder where most of us pile up report (1).pdf and report (2).pdf. Here is how the five options compare on what they scan and what they cost.
| App | Price | What it scans | Similar photos | Undo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Photos (built in) | Free | Photos library only | Yes | 30 days in Recently Deleted |
| dupeGuru | Free, open source | Any folder | Yes (Picture mode) | No, you choose delete, move or copy |
| Gemini 2 | Free download, $19.99 a year to clean in one click | Whole drive, Photos, Music, external drives | Yes | Restore removed duplicates |
| Duplicate File Finder (Nektony) | Free, Pro $34.99 once or $14.99 a year | Disks, folders, Photos libraries | Preview | Restore in Pro |
| Sweepy (ours) | Free for 2 folders, Pro $9.99 once | Folders you pick | No | 7 days free, 30 days Pro |

1. Photos: the free pick for duplicate pictures#
If most of your copies are photos, do not buy anything yet. Since macOS 13 Ventura, the Photos app builds a Duplicates collection for you. Open Photos and look under Utilities in the sidebar. Apple says the collection can take a while to appear on a big library, because Photos analyzes it in the background.
Select a row and click Merge, or press ⌘ A to merge every group at once. Photos keeps one copy and moves the rest to Recently Deleted, where you can get them back for 30 days. Space is freed only after that folder is emptied.
Photos does not touch anything outside its library, so your Downloads folder and your documents need one of the apps below.
2. dupeGuru: free, flexible, but no longer updated#
dupeGuru is a free, open-source app for macOS, Windows and Linux. It has three modes: Standard compares file names or contents, Music compares tags, and Picture finds images that look alike even when they are not identical. Its file-name matching is fuzzy, so it can catch Invoice final.pdf and Invoice FINAL v2.pdf.
The catch is age. The newest release, 4.3.1, came out on July 9, 2022, and the release notes say the macOS build is signed, "however not with a paid developer subscription", so macOS may ask you to confirm before it opens. It runs natively on Apple silicon, but the interface feels like a tool for people who like settings. We cover the newer options in dupeGuru alternatives for Mac.
3. Gemini 2: the most complete, on a yearly plan#
Gemini 2 from MacPaw scans the whole Mac, external drives and network volumes, and it understands the Photos and Music libraries. It finds similar photos and tracks that differ only by format or bit rate. Smart Selection picks which copy to keep, and a Duplicates Monitor watches folders for new copies.
The download is free, but the free version only lets you delete copies by hand through Reveal in Finder. One-click cleanup needs the Yearly Access in-app purchase at $19.99. If you have years of photos and music, that is a fair price for what it covers. For a direct match-up with the free option, read Gemini 2 vs dupeGuru.
4. Duplicate File Finder by Nektony: a strong free tier#
Nektony's Duplicate File Finder Remover is free in the Mac App Store and the free version does more than most: it scans disks, folders and Photos libraries in one session, previews similar folders and photos, and deletes duplicate files after you review them.
The Pro upgrade adds bulk selection, removing and merging duplicate folders, moving copies to a folder, and restoring removed duplicates. Pro costs $34.99 once, $14.99 a year or $7.99 a month. It needs macOS 11 or later.
5. Sweepy: for Downloads and Desktop, with undo#
Full disclosure: we make Sweepy. It is the narrowest app on this list on purpose. It reads only the folders you choose, usually Downloads and Desktop, and sorts what it finds into four piles: duplicates matched byte for byte, old .dmg and .pkg installers, files not opened in 90 days, and files of 500 MB or more.
Nothing is deleted for good. Every file goes to the Trash, and History can undo a whole cleanup: 7 days on Free, 30 days on Pro. It does not find similar photos and does not look inside the Photos library, so pair it with Photos if pictures are your problem. Sweepy is free with every feature for two folders; Sweepy Pro is a one-time $9.99 for unlimited folders. It needs macOS 14 or later.
Which one should you pick?#
- Mostly photos: use Photos first. It is free and already on your Mac.
- Free, any folder, and you like settings: dupeGuru, knowing it has not been updated since 2022.
- Huge drive, Photos and Music, similar files: Gemini 2 on the yearly plan.
- A free tier that deletes for you: Duplicate File Finder by Nektony.
- Messy Downloads and Desktop, scared of deleting the wrong file: Sweepy.
If your Mac is simply out of space, duplicates may not be the biggest problem. Check why your Mac storage is full first: on many Macs, caches and developer files take far more room than copies do.
Sweepy finds duplicate files, old installers and forgotten big files in your Downloads and Desktop, and cleans them up in one click. Nothing is deleted for good: every file goes to the Trash, and any cleanup can be undone..
FAQ
Is there a free duplicate file finder for Mac?
Yes. The Photos app finds duplicate photos for free, and dupeGuru is a free, open-source app that scans any folder. Sweepy and Duplicate File Finder are also free to download and find duplicates without paying, with extra features behind a one-time purchase.
Does macOS have a built-in duplicate file finder?
Only for photos. Photos has a Duplicates collection under Utilities in the sidebar. For other files, Finder can sort a folder by name or size so copies sit next to each other, but it does not compare file contents.
Is it safe to delete duplicate files on a Mac?
It is safe when the copies are identical byte for byte and you keep one. Pick an app that moves copies to the Trash or lets you undo, and never delete duplicates inside system folders or app bundles.
Which duplicate finder finds similar photos, not just exact copies?
Gemini 2 and dupeGuru's Picture mode find photos that look alike, and Photos also groups near-identical shots. Sweepy matches exact copies only.
