Short answer
  • Pick Gemini 2 if you want one-click cleanup across a whole drive, the Photos library and Music, and you are fine paying $19.99 a year.
  • Pick dupeGuru if you want a free, open-source scanner with fuzzy name matching and do not mind a dated interface.
  • dupeGuru has not had a release since version 4.3.1 in July 2022, while Gemini 2 is still updated in the Mac App Store.
  • If your copies are mostly in Downloads and Desktop, Sweepy is a third option with a free tier and undo. We make Sweepy.

Gemini 2 vs dupeGuru at a glance#

Gemini 2 and dupeGuru are the two names that come up most when people ask how to find duplicate files on a Mac. One is a polished paid app from MacPaw, the company behind CleanMyMac. The other is a free, open-source tool that has been around for over a decade. They overlap more than you might think, and differ most on price, updates and how much they do for you.

Facts come from the Mac App Store listing for Gemini 2 and from dupeGuru's site and GitHub releases, checked on October 13, 2026.

What each one scans#

Gemini 2 is built to look everywhere. It finds duplicate files of any type, duplicate folders, and copies on external drives and network volumes. It understands the Photos library and the Music library, where it can match tracks that differ only by format or bit rate. A Duplicates Monitor can keep watching chosen folders and tell you when new copies show up.

dupeGuru scans the folders you add. In Standard mode it compares file names or file contents. In Music mode it reads tags such as artist and title. In Picture mode it fuzzy-matches images. Its name matching is fuzzy too, so it can pair Budget 2026.xlsx with Budget 2026 (final).xlsx, which an exact-match scanner would miss.

Safety and undo#

Both apps try hard not to delete the wrong thing. Gemini 2 auto-selects copies so the original stays, lets you exclude folders from scans, and can restore a wrongly removed duplicate. It can also replace copies with hard links, which frees space while keeping every path working.

dupeGuru does not delete anything until you choose an action, and it offers move and copy as well as delete. Moving duplicates into a holding folder first is the safest way to use it: check that nothing broke for a week, then delete the folder. Whichever app you use, never run a duplicate scan on /System, /Library or inside app bundles; see what is safe to delete in Library.

Updates and support#

This is the biggest difference. Gemini 2 is a current Mac App Store app from a large company, at version 2.10.2.

dupeGuru's last release is 4.3.1 from July 2022, a bug-fix release for a problem that could mark non-duplicates as duplicates in content scans. It still runs on Apple silicon, but there is no sign of new features, and its macOS build is signed without a paid Apple developer account. That is fine for a free tool you understand; it is a risk if you want something that keeps pace with each new macOS. If that worries you, see dupeGuru alternatives that still get updates.

Price#

dupeGuru costs nothing. Gemini 2 is free to download and will show you every duplicate, but the free version makes you remove them one by one through Reveal in Finder. Cleaning up in one click needs Yearly Access, $19.99 a year in the US Mac App Store.

A third option for Downloads and Desktop#

Disclosure: we make Sweepy, so read this part with that in mind. If your copies are not spread across a whole drive but pile up in Downloads and Desktop, both apps above are more than you need. Sweepy reads only the folders you pick, matches duplicates byte for byte, and also flags old .dmg installers and big files. Every file goes to the Trash and a cleanup can be undone. It is free for two folders and $9.99 once for more, but it does not find similar photos or scan the Photos library. See all options in best duplicate file finder for Mac.

Which one should you pick?#

  • You have a big photo and music collection and want it done for you: Gemini 2.
  • You want free and do not mind tuning settings: dupeGuru, moving files before deleting them.
  • Your mess is the Downloads folder: try Sweepy's free tier, or clean it by hand with the steps in Mac storage full.

FAQ

Is dupeGuru safe to use on a Mac?

dupeGuru is open source and its maker says the engine was designed with safety in mind. It lets you move or copy duplicates instead of deleting them, which is the safest way to try it. Its macOS build is not signed with a paid developer account, so macOS may ask you to confirm before opening it.

Is Gemini 2 free?

The download is free and it will find duplicates, but the free version only lets you remove them by hand through Reveal in Finder. One-click cleanup needs the Yearly Access in-app purchase, $19.99 in the US Mac App Store.

Does dupeGuru work on Apple silicon Macs?

Yes. The 4.3.x release notes say the macOS build works on Intel and M1 Macs, and it runs natively on Apple silicon.

Which one finds similar photos?

Both. Gemini 2 detects similar photos and can scan the Photos library. dupeGuru's Picture mode fuzzy-matches images that look alike in any folder.
